Engineering 111 - Bridge Building

  1. Download and install IrfanView. Watch this flash movie if you have any problems or questions.

  2. Click on one of the dates that is also your birthday here: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/archivepix.html
    Press "Alt" and "Print Screen" at the same time on your keyboard. This will capture an image of the open window (i.e. the web browser with your astronomy image).

  3. Run Infanview and hit Ctrl-V to paste your image into IrfanView. Then select "File -> Save As" from the Irfanview menu.
    Select "GIF - Compuserve GIF" as the file type and use "Yourlastname-Yourfirstname-0.GIF" as the file name and save this file to your desktop. This is image #0.

  4. Now upload image #0 from your desktop.

  5. Download Bridge Builder and install it on your computer.

  6. Build a bridge that will allow the train to successfully travel across your bridge for each of the 7 levels of the game.

  7. After you have created working bridges for each of the 7 levels, go back and capture a screen image of each. Each screen shot should display the words "LEVEL PASSED". To do this hit Alt-Print Screen on your keyboard after your train has passed. Your bridge should fit in the screen. Then exit Bridge Builder and paste your image into IrfanView by pressing Ctrl-V. Save the image of the first bridge as "level1.jpg" in IrfanView. Repeat this for all 7 levels. Watch this flash movie if you have any problems or questions.

  8. Grading will be based on neatness, organization, design, and uniqueness of the bridges.
    Important: To get credit for this exercise each image must be different from any of your classmates. The image must be unique. You must not share your images with your classmates.
