    Night Lab - 2/8/2012
    Posted: Feb 8, 2012
Astronomy 305 will meet at the observatory at 8:00PM on Wednesday, 2/8/2012.  I understand that some students have an exam in another class from 6-8pm and may be arriving late.  Those students that are not in that class will be divided into 2 groups at 8:00PM.  One group will use the 16" telescope with Collin and the other group will work with me on the 18" telescope.   We will locate the following objects using these 2 telescopes:
    1. Polaris or Kocab
    2. Sirius
    3. Betelgeuse
    4. Procyon
    5. Canopus
    6. Dubhe or Alcor & Mizar
    7. Regulus
    8. Arneb (in Lepus)
    9. Castor or Pollux
    10. Merach (in Andromeda)
    11. Mirfak (in Perseus)
    12. Capella
    13. Schedar
    14. Aldebaran
    15. Hamal (in Aries)
Note that this is not a graded exercise.   It is an exercise that will help you become familiar with how to use the 18" and 16" telescopes as well as help prepare you for the star-identification exercise on Exam 1.

Once all of the students have arrived at the obsevatory the groups will swap telescopes (with those using the 16" telescope moving to the 18" telescope and vice versa).

Between 9:00PM and 9:30PM we will go into the classroom to see if you have any questions on the take-home Practice Exam:  http://astro.sfasu.edu/courses/ast305/homework/Practice%20Exam%20I%20-%20Take%20Home.doc

    Globe Night
    Posted: Jan 1, 2012
The GLOBE at Night program is an international citizen-science campaign which encourages community involvement. Citizen-scientists measure their night sky brightness and submit their observations to a website from a computer or smart phone. For the last six years, the GLOBE at Night campaign has typically ran for two weeks each winter/spring. People in 115 countries have contributed 66,000 measurements, making GLOBE at Night one of the most successful night sky awareness campaigns. The next campaign in 2012 offers four opportunities for night sky observers to participate in GLOBE at Night. These dates are:

    January 14-23
    February 12-21
    March 13-22
